GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (May 5, 2012) – Alex Davis of Albertville, Ala., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 27 pounds, 1 ounce Saturday to win the EverStart Series Southeast Division event on Lake Guntersville with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 81 pounds, 12 ounces. For his victory, Davis earned $34,767.

“I had a great week out here. It went really good today,” Davis continued. “I think I caught around 20 to 25 keepers today, with at least three limits over 20 pounds. I was fishing on the lower end of the lake. I targeted Honeycomb Creek, Brown’s Creek and I also had a few spots near Seibold Creek. It was about a 15-mile stretch that I would run, and I would just hit all of my spots. I probably had around 25 different spots that I would run to. I would stay for a bit and if I was catching fish, I would just sit on them. If I wasn’t, I would just run to the next one.

“I was fishing pretty deep – anywhere from 14 to 32 feet deep,” said Davis. “Earlier this week I had some success with a big spoon, and I caught a few on a jig head rigged with a single shad-colored swimbait. However, today all of my fish came on the Alabama rig. I had it rigged with Strike King Shadalicious swimbaits, and I was using multiple different lengths and weights. If the fish were up higher, I would use the 1/8-ounce or ¼-ounce rig. If they were deeper, I would throw the 3/8-ounce or ½-ounce rig. The last week they really moved from the grass and went out deeper, and I was able to find a bunch of big schools of them. The bass are mostly out in their summer spots now, and should be there for the rest of the summer.

“I guide on Lake Guntersville and have pretty much fished it every day since January,” Davis went on to say. “Coming in to this event I thought it would take around 65 to 70 pounds to win this thing. I never thought it would take me 80 pounds to get it done. I couldn’t have done this without my sponsors – Vicious fishing line, Strike King Baits, and Ranger Boats. I’m planning on joining the FLW Tour next year as a boater and have been saving my money to make the big jump, so this win is definitely a good shot in the arm for me.”

Fleming caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday – a 7-pound, 13-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s EverStart Series Big Bass award of $298.

Justin Sward of Birmingham, Ala., won the Co-angler Division and a Ranger 177TR with an Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 62 pounds, 12 ounces.

BULL SHOALS, Ark. — Brandon Palaniuk may have $100,000 in the bank after his win today at the Bassmaster Elite Series TroKar Quest at Bull Shoals Lake, but that’s not going to change his lifestyle. He planned to spend Sunday night sleeping in his pickup truck, just as he has every night this week and during most other tournaments.

“It’s just easy,” said Palaniuk, who beds down in his covered pick-up bed near launch sites. “I’ve got power and a shower, and it’s close to the water. That’s all I need. And it’s free. A hundred thousand dollars doesn’t go as far as it used to.”

The 24-year-old angler from Rathdrum, Idaho, began the final round with a forbidding lead of 12-pounds, 13 ounces, after weighing in the heaviest five-bass limits each of the first three days.

Although his final string was much lighter than usual, his four-day total of 78 pounds, 6 ounces gave him a double-digit margin over Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., who had 66 pounds, 8 ounces. The rest of the field was much closer. Myers outranked Trussville, Ala., pro Matt Herren’s four-day total of 66-7 by just 1 ounce.

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., took fourth place with the day’s biggest bag of 17-11 for a tournament total of 66 pounds, and Brent Chapman of Quivira, Kan., was fifth with 64-7. Chapman took over the lead for Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year with his performance at Bull Shoals.

Palaniuk found his winning area in the west Sugar Loaf part of Bull Shoals Lake.

“The fish were only a couple of hundred yards away from where they wanted to spawn,” Palaniuk said. “It was a quick two- to three-minute swim from where they wanted to hang and where they wanted to spawn. I honestly had the best area in the lake.”

It’s a textbook structure spot, and one that other competitors in the Trokar Quest tried during practice. None had the confidence in it that Palaniuk did. The young angler found it on a lake map, and on his first cast to the spot in practice, he caught a 3 ½-pound bass on it. That validated his game plan and gave him confidence he could win, even before competition began.

Palaniuk fished deep-diving crankbaits – a Rapala DT16 in a blueback herring color and a Strike King 6XD in brown ghost craw. He fished them on an Abu Garcia Veritas rod with a Revo Winch reel in a 5.4:1 gear ratio. “The DT 16 series is my confidence bait,” he said. “I caught my entire 24-4 bag on Day 2 on that.”

A key to getting bites, he explained, was to hit the submerged rockpiles around the roadbed from precisely the right angle. The rockpiles were about the size of a boat deck, and a miss of 1 or 2 feet wouldn’t get a bite.

Palaniuk also praised his Hydrowave unit, an electronic device that mimicks the sound of baitfish, for triggering bites from bigger bass.

Myers’ key bait was a Rapala DT10 on 10-pound-test Berkley fluorocarbon line. He used a Pinnacle 6.3:1 reel with a 7-11 cranking stick.

Herren said a combination of the water clearing and the level falling caused him to lose track of the fish. Yesterday, with two hours left of fishing, the Trussville, Ala., angler located them again in the main channel. He followed up with that strategy today, pulling in 75 using the M Series green pumpkin jig.

Evers boated his 17-11 bag today by fishing any windblown point with a mudline, using a square-billed crankbait Xcs Excalibur 200 and 300 size.

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (March 24, 2012) – Brandon McMillan continues his dominance in tournament competition , as the Clewiston, Fla., pro weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 4 ounces Saturday to win the EverStart Series Southeast Division event on Lake Seminole with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 51 pounds, 11 ounces. For his victory, McMillan earned $35,000 and a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor.

“Today was perfect timing for me to catch that shad spawn,” said McMillan. “The weather was overcast, breezy and foggy and that kept the shad around for another 20 minutes. I was fishing on the sand bars near Spring Creek, and just swinging a 4x4 Bass Jigs 3/8-ounce white swimjig. I was just swimming it through that grass early this morning, and the overcast weather allowed me to get the extra key minutes that really helped me to catch them.

“I had 11 bites today, and caught eight fish,” McMillan went on to say. “I was fishing anywhere from 2½ to 4½ feet of water. I would fish the sand bars in the morning, then go throw a worm real slow for the rest of the day. I also caught a few using a Gambler EZ Swimmer, white, with a big paddletail for good vibration. I figured coming in that it was going to take around 50 to 55 pounds to win this tournament, and I’m happy I was able to get there.”

Baker wins co-angler title

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (Feb. 25, 2012) – Troy Lindner of Los Angeles, Calif., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 6 ounces Saturday to win the EverStart Series Western Division event on Lake Havasu with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 49 pounds, 11 ounces. For his victory, Lindner earned $29,665 and a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor.

“Honestly, this doesn’t feel real at all,” said Lindner. “I’m in shock. Coming in today in ninth place, I figured I would need 21 pounds to even make it close. I thought I basically had no chance. It’s a complete miracle I won this thing. My last nine tournaments with FLW, I haven’t cashed a check, so I took some time off and got my head and priorities straight. I think that preparation and a blessing from God is what did it for me today.

“I fished a lot of the small coves and the points leading into those coves,” Lindner continued. “I was using Trigger X baits for most of the tournament. My two biggest fish were caught on a Trigger X Aggression Spadetail worm and a Trigger X Flutter Worm. I was catching fish from 3 to 15 feet, basically wherever it banked off deep. The last part of the day, I sat an hour waiting on this one fish on a bed that I thought was a big one. Every 15 minutes I would go back and make a couple of casts at him. I finally got him to bite on the Spadetail worm, and he ended up being my second biggest fish of the tournament. I had about a dozen bites today, and was able to catch seven of them.

“I’ll definitely be fishing the next event at the (California) Delta,” Lindner went on to say. “I’ve been beaten pretty bad there in the past, so if I could cash a check there that would be another miracle.”

Jon Griffith of Mesa, Ariz. caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday – a 6-pound, 6-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s EverStart Series Big Bass award of $234.

Kyle Baker of Lancaster, Calif., won the Co-angler Division and a Ranger 177TR with an Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor and a Ranger Cup bonus of $5,000 with a three-day total of 14 bass weighing 35 pounds, 14 ounces.

William Penrod of Salome, Ariz. caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Friday – a 5-pound, 11-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s EverStart Series Big Bass award of $156.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (Feb. 25, 2012) – The Utah Valley University team of Russell Behlings of Custer, S.D. and Aaron Warner of Orem, Utah won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Conference event on Lake Havasu Saturday with five bass weighing 13 pounds, 11 ounces. The victory earned the team $5,000. The win also helped them advance to the Western Conference Regional Championship.

“I’m on top of the world right now!” said Warner, an Exercise Science major. “What an awesome day! We started off hitting the channels, doing some sight fishing. We were able to get a couple of big bass off the beds, and had some luck. I was fishing a drop-shot with a beaver in about 20 to 25 feet of water. I kept telling Russ that we were going to get a buzzer-beater fish at the end, and we did. I caught our last one with just a few minutes left in the tournament, and we were able to cull a smaller one. That fish made the difference.”

The day featured a slight breeze and warm, clear skies, and the team from Utah Valley won by 2 pounds, 1 ounce over their closest competitors.

“Our club did a great job preparing us and getting us ready to fish this lake,” Warner went on to say. “We weren’t really familiar with this lake, but they gave us some great tips and we tried to do the best research we could. It’s cold right now in Utah, so to be down here in this warm 70-plus degree weather is just awesome.”

Rounding out the top five teams and also advancing to the Western Conference Championship are:

2nd: Northern Arizona University – Nicole Albright and Brent Perkins, both of Phoenix, Ariz. (five bass, 11-10, $1,500)

3rd: California State University-Monterey Bay – Matthew Diaz, Castroville, Calif., and David Hamblin, Morgan Hill, Calif. (five bass, 11-2, $1,000)

4th: Eastern Washington University – Nick Barr, Lacey, Wash., and Jesse Squires, Cheney, Wash. (five bass, 10-12, $1,000)

5th: California State University-Chico State – Nicholas Carrico, Chico, Calif., and Anthony Dayton, Walnut Creek, Calif. (four bass, 10-10, $1,000)

CLEWISTON, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2012) – EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., had endured three days of tough weather and wind and managed to lead the first three days of competition at the Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude. All he needed was one more solid day’s weight to claim his first FLW Tour title.

Tharp caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 2 ounces Sunday to win $125,000 with a four-day catch of 20 bass weighing 101-12. The catch gave him the win by a massive 23-pound, 9-ounce margin over John Cox of Debary, Fla., who caught a total of 20 bass weighing 78-3 and earned $35,000. Tharp’s margin of victory broke the FLW Tour record set by National Guard pro Brett Hite (20-4, Lake Toho, 2008).

“When I caught the first big one today and it put me at 19 (pounds) and I caught the second big one I didn’t say anything, but when I caught the third one I knew it was over,” Tharp added.

“It was not what you want in south Florida,” Tharp said. “We had a wind chill of 27 degrees this morning. The winds were sustained 20 (miles per hour) with gusts to 40. The style I was fishing is what you need to do under those conditions.”

And Tharp’s style of fishing just happened to be what he loves to do – use a big rod, heavy line and big weights to flip grass. Tharp fished the north end of the lake and threw a black with blue flake Bitters Baits B.F.M. paired with a 1 ½-ounce pegged sinker. Tharp said he boated eight keepers during the course of the day.

Overall there were 27 bass weighing 77 pounds, 12 ounces caught by pros Sunday. The catch included four five-bass limits.

Aymon Wilcox of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., won the co-angler division and $20,000 Saturday with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 44 pounds, 4 ounces followed by Spiro Agouros of Peterborough, Ontario, in second place with 13 bass weighing 38-0 worth $7,625.

In FLW Tour Open tournaments, pros and co-anglers are competing for valuable points that could help them qualify for the 2013 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of bass fishing.

The Tour stop on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude was hosted by Roland & Mary Ann Martins Marina & Resort, and was the first of 10 Walmart FLW Tour tournaments of the 2011 season. The Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Hartwell presented by Folgers will be the next tournament and will be held March 8-11 in Greenville/Anderson, S.C. The event will be hosted by the Greenville Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Anderson Convention & Visitors Bureau and boats will launch from Portman Shoals Marina in Anderson, S.C. For a complete schedule, visit FLWOutdoors.com.

Coverage of the Lake Okeechobee tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network when “FLW” airs March 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. ET. "FLW" is hosted by Jason Harper and is broadcast to more than 559 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.
